Arrgh, I don't have much time as I should hit the sack soon. I'm sleep deprived because I couldn't sleep in the rock solid Jesuit Residence beds (I miss my memory foam bed!). I've got to figure out how to imbed Google Maps into the post so you guys can follow the route I took.My GPS lead me astray today! I thought the system preferentially uses highways -- however, it picked a back country route (where the limit was 80 km/h) to get to my destination. Imagine my surprise when I was bouncing along a bumpy asphalt road for about 10-15 minutes only to arrive at a sign saying: Dead End, Cul de sac 4 km. I then had a choice -- believe the GPS or believe the sign. The sign won. Tbe moral of the story: always double check the GPS route and always have a rough idea of the route you're going to take.
Aside from that hiccough, it was a smooth 10 hour ride all the way. I regret cutting Quebec out of my itinerary: I've never been east of Quebec City and the St. Lawrence River looked very picturesque with all the farm land straddling the river.
My first impressions of New Brunswick were: forests and very hilly. To get to Bathurst, I had to take a smaller highway that cut across the top of the province. I was warned against driving this highway at night and I can see why -- it's in rough shape (bumpy and pot holes), it's in moose country, it's unlit, and there's no cell coverage for its entire length. Bad combination. And yet despite this, the locals have no fear of speeding down this highway at 120 km/hr (90 km/hr limit).
Well, I made it into town and I'm spending the night with a friend and colleague from Anesthesia School. He graciously drove me around town and showed me the brand spanking new OR wing that was just built at the hospital he was working at. It's easily the equal of any academic hospital OR in Toronto (the laparoscopy room even has green lights! Eat your heart out SMH...) but smaller.
Okay, I know I haven't been posting many photos. Today was the last heavy driving day and tomorrow, I'm going to start taking it slow and the photos will come.
